Nearly all of the US media coverage of genetically modified (GM) food has missed the main point: The whole furor was caused by the irresponsible actions of a single rogue biotech multinational, Monsanto. The furor has very little to do with science, biotechnology, or even economics. Take Monsanto out of the equation and the whole issue could be resolved fairly easily with a little good will and common sense.
The British government and the British science establishment reacted to the angry reaction of the British public as if it were a challenge by "laypersons" to authority and expertise of "professionals" - with an angry reaction of their own. Because of this, they failed to understand that the anger of the public was simply the natural reaction of sensible human beings who are worried about their health and safety. The public was simply afraid that it was being forced to eat unsafe and unwanted products and reacted to this threat.
Unfortunately, the elitist reaction of the science establishment was to give immediate support to the government's claims of safety despite the fact that little or no scientific data on the risks to humans had been published (or has since been published). Not surprisingly, the public was not reassured by either governmental or scientific" assertions that the products were harmless. The public had previously heard the same kind of safety claims for meat products during the furor over "mad cow disease". Now there is no question that products that the British government and its loyal scientists called "harmless" actually caused deaths and serious illnesses.
The crux of the matter is this: Deliberate Monsanto policies were primarily responsible for this grave abuse of biotechnology. It was Monsanto's policy to force its unwanted products on consumers worldwide--irrespective of the harm it was doing to its customers, to worldwide sales of US agricultural products, or the rest of biotechnology corporations. Monsanto has defied the European Union, the United Nations, and the laws of many different nations. Monsanto is a rogue corporation whose self-serving policies have endangered the health, safety, and welfare of the world population and it should be put out of business.
UPDATE ON LOW-LEVEL IONIZING RADIATION
from Irwin D Bross, PhD
The false assurances of the safety of low-level ionizing radiation that began with the A-bomb in 1945 are still being issued by all U.S. government agencies. The gross underestimates of the risks in the BEIR Report are still the ones used by governments worldwide to "protect" their citizens. It seems the Pentagon cover-up has been successful and can go on indefinitely. It also seems that the principal medical allies of the Pentagon, the radiologists and cancer oncologists, can continue the excessive use of diagnostic medical X-rays that is causing excess cancers of all kinds worldwide. So you might wonder why bother with an update at this time?
My reason is a small but amusing item in SCIENCE, (9 July 1999). Under the heading "Science Policy" is the headline "NRC Pulled into Radiation Risk Brawl". It reveals how "two bitter foes are unloading on the National Research Council for assembling what they claim is a biased panel to weigh radiation risks".
The funny part is the foes are in complete agreement on one thing: NRC has rigged the panel. Even a third party in the dispute agrees with this. So the foes (who also agree on increasing allowable radiation exposures) have unintentionally provided proof positive that the NRC panel was rigged to obtain this "finding": NRC may have a harder time selling its "finding" after the panelists themselves have said that the panel was rigged to produce this result.
In my view, people on the panel are in conflict-of-interest because this "finding" would be in their own self interest. While this is a common situation on U.S. government panels, it is ordinarily very hard to prove.
Dr Bross has written several books (See book list.) on government policy and health, dealing specifically with the effects of radiation exposure. They are all available along with updated observations on a CD Rom $50 from Biomedical Metatechnology 109 Maynard Drive, Amherst NY 14226
