FEBRUARY 29, 2000 Vegan Jerry Friedman is suing his HMO, Kaiser Permenente, for "religious" discrimination and battery after being fired because he refused to submit to a mumps vaccine because its preparation involves the use of unborn chicks from fertilized eggs.
The battery charge is based on the fact that he took a TB skin test after being assured it was vegan and later learned that it contained derivatives of cows' or pigs' blood.
