DLRM CHARGES UK GOVERNMENT
WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR XENOTRANSPLANTS

In response to media reports that pig-to-human heart transplants were about to be attempted, Doctors and Lawyers for Responsible Medicine issued a statement on May 12 (reproduced below) calling upon the British Government "to disclose to the public without delay, scientific proof to weigh against the fact that all major animal-to-human organ transplants have failed as a result of rejection."

"DLRM hold the British Government responsible for any damage to the Nation's health" resulting from cross-species organ transplants," the statement continued.

It concluded by citing four major swine flu epidemics, a new strain of hepatitis E in pigs, a virus that infected two piggery workers in Australia, and pointing out that Dr Jonathan Allan at Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in Texas and Prof. Fredeick Murphy, Dean of Virology at the University of California at Davis are among those warning of the "extreme dangers inherent in cross species organ transplants."

In the interest of public health and safety Doctors and Lawyers for Responsible Medicine (DLRM), believe that they have a duty to speak out following recent media reports of the imminence of Britain's first pig-to-human heart transplant.

Although denied by both the British Government and Imutran (Novartis), if these reports prove to be well founded, DLRM hold the British Government responsible for any damage to the Nation's health and welfare as a result.

DLRM CALL UPON THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT TO DISCLOSE TO THE PUBLIC WITHOUT DELAY SCIENTIFIC PROOF TO WEIGH AGAINST THE FACT THAT ALL MAJOR ANIMAL-TO-HUMAN ORGAN TRANSPLANTS HAVE FAILED, AS A RESULT OF REJECTION.

The following scientific facts all weigh against animal-to-human transplants:

1. Devastating human flu epidemics have orginated in pig populations, e.g. the 1918 flu epidemic, in which 20 million pople are estimated to have died worldwide; the flu epidemics of 1959; the so-called "Hong Kong flu".

2. Pigs carry a host of other viral diseases with potential hazard to human health, e.g. porcine retroviruses (which belong to the same class of viruses as the AIDS virus) have been shown to be active in human cell culture.

In 1997 an urecognised strain of hepatitus E was discovered in pigs in USA.

This year, an Australian virologist has discovered a hitherto unknown virus which caused deformities and stillbirths in pigs, and infected two workers, who developed flu-like symptoms.

3. Internationally-respected virologists, such as Dr Jonathan Allen at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in Texas and Professor Frederick Murphy, Dean of Virology at Davis, California, have warned of the extreme dangers inherent in cross-species organ transplants.
