Sequoia National Park rangers work hard to convince people they must not leave food where a bear can get a it. Campsites are provided with bearproof metal boxes for storage, but some bears are killed every year because they have acquired a taste for human food. This makes them dangerous to people. Incidentally black bears will kill and eat people. Grizzlies merely kill, but both would rather avoid us.
We are hoping that the adult black bear who has been seen on the far side of the Civitas Sanctuary will choose to find a den within the sanctuary before next hunting season. The Town highway supervisor came upon this bear unexpectedly and hastened to make tracks back in the direction from whence he'd come. He stole a look over his shoulder to make sure he wasn't being followed and saw the bear making tracks in the opposite direction, looking over HIS shoulder to make sure HE wasn't being followed.
